Visitors to other Countries should Follow Local Customs IELTS Essay

Some people believe that foreign visitors should follow local norms while others argue that the host country should welcome other cultures. I think foreign visitors should do as the Romans do because otherwise their behavior might strike locals as being offensive.

On the one hand, embracing cultural differences is a good way to show hospitality. Imagine that an Asian is visiting a western country. If all the restaurants they go to offer chopsticks as well as knives and forks, they would probably feel more comfortable and at home. However, I think that if a host country tries too hard to cater to foreign tastes, it might lose elements that are unique to its culture, which in turn might make it a less interesting place to visit. Put in other words, why would a person go through the time and expense of traveling abroad to just do the same things they do at home, the same way?  ielts-essay

On the other hand, by following local customs and behavior, visitors are safe not to offend locals. For instance, many Americans chat loudly in public places and talk about and share their lives with complete strangers. If they act like this in countries like Norway and Denmark, they would be considered rude. I agree with this argument because When a person is in another country, their behavior reflects on their whole country. If they do things against local norms. They might leave the impression that all people from that country are impolite or bizarre.

In conclusion, although a host country can be more hospitable if it welcomes other cultures, I believe it is more important that foreign visitors follow local norms to avoid offending local residents.
