An Experience when you Received a Call from a Stranger

Last year, during my summer vacation, I visited the Andaman Islands with my family. These islands are nearly 2000 miles away from my city, and the most preferred ways to travel there are either by train or aircraft. Since flight tickets are usually quite expensive during the holiday season, my parents decided that we would travel by train.

The journey by train takes nearly two days and ends at a port city, from where the final leg to the islands is completed by ship. While we were waiting for our train, sitting on a bench at the railway station, I was listening to music on my phone when I suddenly received a call from an unknown number.

Curious, I picked up the call. On the other side, I heard a man’s voice that sounded mature, possibly in his thirties or forties. He asked if it was the customer care number of ANZ Bank. I told him politely that he had reached the wrong number. I assumed either he had dialed the wrong number or it was a case of wrong connection. I was about to hang up when I noticed a hint of panic in his voice.

Just out of curiosity, I asked what had happened. He told me that he had lost his credit card and was extremely worried that someone might misuse it, leading to financial loss. He was desperately trying to reach his bank’s customer care to block the card immediately.

I informed him that he could do it through his mobile phone, which he was unaware of. It didn’t surprise me because many people from his age group aren’t very comfortable using smartphone features beyond calling or messaging. He humbly asked me if I could guide him through the process. Since it was a simple task, I decided to help. I asked him if he had the bank’s mobile app installed, and luckily, he did.

I then guided him to open the app, go to the security settings, and look for the “block/unblock card” option. He found the option quickly and selected it. Almost instantly, he received an SMS confirming that his credit card had been blocked.

He was incredibly thankful and called me a lifesaver. I told him it was no big deal. Just then, the siren of our train rang, signaling its arrival, so I politely told him I had to leave. He thanked me once again and wished me the best of luck in life. It was a touching moment and a rare experience where a stranger’s call turned into a meaningful interaction. I felt genuinely happy to be of help and realized how small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.
