Nowadays, many people believe that access to higher education should be a fundamental right available to everyone, regardless of their economic background. While this perspective has its merits, I mostly disagree, as I believe it is more important to address the disparities between social classes through targeted support.

Advocates of universal educational funding argue that all taxpayers deserve equal treatment. Wealthier individuals, who typically do not qualify for financial aid unless awarded a competitive scholarship, contribute significantly more in taxes. From this standpoint, it seems only fair that they also benefit equally from government spending on higher education.

Denying them financial support purely due to their income level may appear unjust, as it disregards their substantial contributions to the state’s revenue.

While this viewpoint is understandable, I tend to align with those who believe that financial status should be considered when allocating educational resources. If public funding is distributed equally without regard to need, students from low- or middle-income families may be unable to afford university, whereas wealthier individuals can likely fund their education regardless. In the long term, this could deepen social divisions.

A lack of access to higher education for less privileged groups may erode hopes of upward mobility, leading to disillusionment, resentment, and possibly even social unrest.

In conclusion, while equality under the law is an admirable principle, policy decisions should aim for equity—providing greater support to those who need it most. Rather than enforcing strict equality, the government should promote equal opportunities to ensure a more cohesive and balanced society.
