Prison is an Effective Punishment for People who Commit Crimes IELTS Writing Task 2
In today’s world, with the surge in population, criminal activities have become increasingly difficult for law enforcement agencies and judicial bodies to manage. As a result, individuals found guilty of crimes are often imprisoned. I strongly agree with this approach, as implementing strict punishments can significantly help in reducing the crime rate. This essay will discuss the reasons for supporting this view with relevant examples.
To begin with, the rise in criminal offenses such as theft, drug trafficking, and homicide poses serious threats to both the government and the general public. Consequently, the police are adopting more rigorous investigation methods to ensure offenders are brought to justice. Moreover, courts are providing opportunities for criminals to reform their behavior. For instance, some nations have introduced open-air prisons where inmates are not confined within traditional jail settings. These institutions also encourage inmates to pursue higher education and develop new skills. As a result, many are able to reintegrate into society and lead a more disciplined life after serving their sentence.
However, it is also important to acknowledge that not all detention facilities offer such reformative environments. In certain cases, prisoners face abuse or harsh treatment due to non-cooperation with officials. Some inmates even resort to committing further crimes within prison walls in an attempt to gain notoriety. For example, according to the National Crime Records Bureau of India, there were 21 reported deaths in police custody between 2020 and 2021, highlighting the potential for abuse and mental trauma within the system.
In conclusion, while punishment is necessary to deter criminal behavior, it is equally important to ensure that justice systems uphold human rights and promote rehabilitation. Strengthening laws and increasing public awareness about legal consequences can serve as powerful deterrents. I firmly believe that strong legal action and awareness can discourage individuals from engaging in unlawful activities.
